Penn bashes Bush, war in full-page New York Times ad

Penn's agent declined to comment on how much the advertisement cost. A Times spokeswoman said the standard price for a full page ad in that section of the newspaper is about $135,000...Friday's piece was not the first Penn has placed in a major newspaper. He wrote an open letter to President Bush published in October 2002 by The Washington Post at a reported cost of $56,000, expressing his anti-war views and concerns about the administration's "intolerance of debate."

I have a lot of skepticism toward Hollywood "liberals." They mouth their platitudes about peace and good vibes but never really seem to put it on the line and slam their corporate masters and their complicity in all that the Bushistas have wrought. The entertainment industry not only glorifies war and violence, making people more accepting of such evils, but also distracts and lulls Americans, making them docile and unwilling to even think about their civic responsibilities. Hollywood "liberals" are spineless, more problem than solution, generally.

Sean Penn, and a few others such as Tim Robbins, however, seem to be the real deal. At the very least, Penn's putting his money where his mouth is, taking his dissent directly to the American people.

Gnarly.
