Bush says WMD report backs up war decision
From the AP via the Houston Chronicle:
While Kay's initial report said no weapons of mass destruction have been found, Bush said the investigation showed that Saddam was violating U.N. resolutions demanding that he disarm.
"So he's no longer in power and the world is better for it," the president said.
Bush seized on possible evidence of covert programs to make illegal weapons and said that extensive work remains to be done.
"But these findings already make clear that Saddam Hussein actively deceived the international community, that Saddam Hussein, was in clear violation of United Nations Security Council resolution 1441 and that Saddam Hussein was a danger to the world," he said.
What?!?
If I recall correctly, the US invaded Iraq because they possesed WMDs, not "programs to make illegal weapons." The White House has been pounding away at this "programs" thing since it first became obvious that Iraq had no WMDs back in June. In fact, this word game strategy seems to be proving somewhat successful. If the Associated Press had any balls at all, they'd strongly point out the fact that Bush and company have retroactively changed the pretext for the invasion, instead of simply quoting Democrats' statements to that effect. To be fair, the AP did bury this statement deep inside the article:
Taken together, Kay's findings do not validate most of Bush's prewar assertions that Saddam had widespread chemical and biological weapons and programs to make more, and was developing a nuclear weapon.
If I had blinked, I would have missed it. The main point that gets across is the headline that favors the White House's bogus rhetoric, and that the Democrats disagree. Needless to say, that's really sloppy journalism. After all the evidence (or lack thereof) that's come out since the invasion, why the hell does the press still kiss Bush's butt?
I just don't get it.
