CBS FOLDS TO CONSERVATIVE
POLITICALLY CORRECT CAMPAIGN
TO LIONIZE RONALD REAGAN

From the Nation:

The network has yet to comment, but many media report today that CBS has killed its mini-series about the Ronald Reagan presidency. (It might still pop up on obscure cable.) This is despite the efforts of network execs who, as The New York Times reports, had been frantically cut-and-splicing "to fix what many critics -- none of whom had seen the film and [who] were relying mostly on a report in The New York Times about its contents -- called inaccurate and unfair portrayals of the former president."

And

The point is that you cannot aggressively assert for your man a grand historical sweep and significance -- insist that we all immediately start building public monuments to him -- and simultaneously insist that a fictional critical alternative look be squashed.

This is sad but interesting. It seems that the same conservative flak machine that has been bullying the news media for years has just achieved a major victory against the entertainment side. They tried, unsuccessfully, years ago to discredit Oliver Stone's film Nixon for similar reasons, but were seemingly not strong enough then. Today is a different story: in GOP USA, one must love the Gipper, or else!
