THE JOB LOSS RECOVERY CONTINUES

From the Houston Chronicle:

In part, economists say, job growth has been held down by a veritable explosion in productivity growth. Fewer workers are needed because they are doing so much more.

Employers, finally learning how to use all those new computers they snatched up before the Year 2000 rollover, have realized they can do more with fewer people.

Economists also fear many of the lost jobs, particularly in manufacturing, may be gone forever.

Since the recession began in 2001, the nation's factories have shed some 2.4 million jobs. The National Association of Manufacturers estimates the sector will recover perhaps 250,000 this year, but most of those will be new jobs rather than employers bringing back workers laid off when the economy slowed down.
