Louisiana's gay marriage amendment tossed out

From the AP via the Houston Chronicle:

A state judge today threw out a Louisiana constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, less than three weeks after it was overwhelmingly approved by the voters.

District Judge William Morvant said the amendment was flawed as drawn up by the Legislature because it had more than one purpose: banning not only gay marriage but also civil unions.

The courts had rejected a similar argument before the Sept. 18 election, saying it was premature.

Michael Johnson, an attorney for supporters of the amendment, said he will appeal the ruling.

In their zeal to make sure that homosexuals continue to be marginalized, it appears that the homophobic majority of my new state's voters have overreached themselves. That is, it is apparently against the Louisiana Constitution to intermingle in an amendment two separate issues, even though they are related. I'm happy for the T.K.O. on this, but I'm sure the anti-gay crowd, if this place is anything like Texas at all, will be back next spring with two amendments, instead of one. I guess that's the South for you. Down here they like their chicken fried and their gays unmarried. Or dead if you're Jimmy Swaggart.

Now, would somebody explain to me once again why gay people shouldn't marry each other? Oh yeah: it's a threat to the institution of marriage. Now that I think about it, all this talk of gay weddings is making me want to leave my wife.

Just kidding.
