SOUTHERN BAPTIST CONVENTION FOLLIES
Houstonian wants school inquiries of 'gay acceptance'
The Southern Baptist Convention is once again having it's annual gathering of wackiness, and this year's meeting seems to be hell-bent on continuing last year's absurdity. From the AP via the Houston Chronicle:
The resolution says schools promote acceptance of gays through officially sanctioned gay clubs, diversity training, anti-bullying courses, safe sex and safe schools programs.
It says that if churches find that public schools are teaching acceptance of homosexuality, parents should remove their children and either home-school them or enroll them in Christian schools.
The resolution was co-written by the Rev. Voddie Baucham Jr., a Christian speaker and writer from the Houston suburb of Spring.
"We need to raise the awareness that there is an aggressive effort to teach our children acceptance of homosexuality as an acceptable alternative lifestyle," Baucham said.

Believe me, I have no problem with anyone of conscience removing their children from the public schools, which I believe to be doing more harm than good. Of course, my problems with the schools are quite different than those of fundamentalist nuts, but that's not my point. This resolution, if taken seriously by large numbers of Southern Baptists, would most decidedly not result in a mass exodus of fundamentalist children from gay-friendly schools: rather, such "inquiries of 'gay acceptance'" would result in political pressure on the schools to zip teachers' lips regarding any positive discussion of homosexualty. I think it's completely clear now that fundamentalists are no longer content to withdraw from society in order to more easily live what they believe to be Godly lives. They now want to completely control society such that it adheres to their narrow, archaic, and violent interpretation of the Bible. "Inquiries of 'gay acceptance,'" my ass. This is a call for witch hunts.
If I were still teaching, I'd be one of their targets. I suppose that's something of an honor.
