QUIS CUSTODIET IPSOS CUSTODES
Means "Who Polices the Police?"

From the AP via the Houston Chronicle:

Couple claim beating filmed by cell-phone camera

A witness who didn't know the couple filmed the incident, which began when Williams suffered what she said is an asthma-related seizure.

The video, released Saturday, shows emergency personnel around a woman laying on the pavement. They hold her arms down.

Then the video shows three police officers holding down a man on the ground. Another officer uses a baton to hit the man, who doesn't appear to be struggling at the time.

Myart said Aubrety was beaten in the ribs and peppered sprayed several times while he was handcuffed. Williams as hit on the head by a baton while she was handcuffed, Myart said.

Of course, this incident is disputed by the San Antonio cops who are being sued, but I wouldn't at all be surprised if they ended up losing in court. Cops on the whole are quick to believe that their authority is being challenged, and usually react violently. It doesn't even occur to them that disrespecting an officer isn't illegal, just rude, and a guy whose wife is having an asthma attack may very well be out of sorts enough to piss off the police, which isn't a good idea, I must admit, but like I said, it's not illegal, and doesn't warrant arrest or beating. But, then, I suppose all that's going to be sorted out in court. We'll see.
