LIZARD KING SLITHERS AWAY
DeLay reportedly won't seek re-election

From the AP via the Houston Chronicle:

Former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, who was touched by a lobbying scandal that ensnared some of his former top aides and cost the Republican his leadership post, won't seek re-election to Congress, officials said today.

They said DeLay also is likely to resign his seat and leave Congress by the end of May or mid-June. That would trigger a special election for his replacement.

And

In an interview with the Galveston County Daily News, DeLay said his decision was based partly on troubling internal polling results, including a poll taken after the March Republican primary that showed DeLay beating Democrat Nick Lampson in a close race.

"Even though I thought I could win, it was a little too risky," DeLay said.

DeLay stepped down from his House majority leader post in January as an election-year corruption scandal staggered Republicans and emboldened Democrats looking to reclaim power in the House and Senate.

And

On Friday, DeLay's former chief of staff pleaded guilty to conspiracy and promised to help with a federal investigation of bribery and lobbying fraud relating to Abramoff.

And just like that, the man who is arguably the most evil son of a bitch to ever hold a seat in Congress is gone. Like the world in T.S. Eliot's existential poem "The Hollow Men," DeLay's reign of corrupt power ends not with a bang, but a whimper. Ha! I love it; it's about time. DeLay says he's leaving because he's afraid he might lose to Lampson, but my money's on his former chief of staff deciding to cooperate with investigators as being the true motivation for his exodus: this is a pretty strong sign that DeLay believes he's going down hard, and wants remove himself as a political distraction from the Republican effort to keep the House in November. Personally, I think there's not a single thing the Lizard King can do now to disassociate his reptilian smell from the GOP. If he really is going to be nailed to the wall by his former employee's testimony, it's going to be plastered all over the news for days. DeLay's already the poster boy for Republican corruption; this stands to simply cement that status.

God, I'm loving this! DeLay's finally getting the humiliation he deserves.
