INSANE? STUPID? LIAR?

From the AP via the Huffington Post courtesy of AlterNet:

Bush: US Must 'Get Off Oil'

President Bush said Wednesday that the United States has to "get off oil" to reduce dependence on foreign suppliers and declared "it should be obvious" that high demand is creating painful gasoline prices.

Bush's assessment was at odds with that from the 13-nation Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, which said before he spoke that it would not put more oil on the global market because crude supplies are plentiful.

And

In the face of criticism, Bush repeated those positions but declared: "The United States is serious about confronting climate change."

"America is in the lead when it comes to energy independence; we're in the lead when it comes to new technologies; we're in the lead when it comes to global climate change _ and we'll stay that way," he said.

And

Democrats roundly criticized the president's record on energy policy.

"The Bush/Cheney administration has paid lip service to renewable energy and backed it up with inadequate and incremental funding support, favored old dirty and unsafe technologies, threatened vetoes of energy bills because they supported renewable energy incentives and mandates, and undermined the science of and the search for solutions to global warming," said a statement from Senate Democrats.

Hmmph. First he says we need to "get off oil," then he tells OPEC to ramp up production. I was almost starting to forget that the word "irony" does not exist in the Republican lexicon.

Anyway.

I have no idea at all what the hell Bush is up to with this obvious bullshit. I mean, come on. Bush is a fucking oil man. He owes his entire career to the oil industry, and continues to have very deep connections with it, both in the US and in the Middle East. Throw in the list of Democratic criticisms listed in the excerpt above, and then consider the fact that he illegally invaded a sovereign nation for its oil. He most definitely does not believe that the United States should "get off oil."

This is pretty nutty. What's he doing?

Like I said, I really have no idea, but that's never stopped me from speculating. On the other hand, any speculation in which I engage on this will necessarily be far out, if only because this is very likely the most deranged statement I've ever heard coming out of the chimp-in-chief's mouth.

Maybe he's going to be introducing some sort of bill to Congress, and is trying to create some sort of leveraged philosophical position that may aid Republicans at the bargaining table. But then, I know of no such legislation, and since when has Bush done anything with the Democratic Congress except whine and freak out when he doesn't get his way? Maybe he's trying his hand at diplomacy or something. On the other hand, everybody else in the world knows what Bush is about, and would never believe in or accept any kind of anti-oil initiative coming from him. Maybe he's telling the truth and has had a major change of heart. No, that's just not possible. Bush has a skull as thick and hard as a bank vault door. He never changes his mind on anything.

Yeah, this is all very weak speculation on my part.

The real question is if he's stupid or insane. But then, other people write these speeches for him, so that means it's a conscious lie, which Bush may believe. Because he's stupid or insane.

I'll be glad when he's gone, if only because the headaches will end.
