QUIS CUSTODIET IPSOS CUSTODES
Means "Who Polices the Police?"

Following up
this post from last summer, from the AP via the Houston Chronicle:

121 concussions reported from DPS boxing drills

As many as 121 recruits have suffered concussions in the state Department of Public Safety academy's fighting drill since 1978, according to a published report.

The Dallas Morning News said in its Wednesday editions that its review of records show DPS has consistently modified the drill as injuries continued and became more serious and as doctors and others raised concerns.

The DPS plans to hire a consultant to review the drill and suggest whether more changes should be made, DPS spokeswoman Tela Mange said.

The latest review follows the May death of Jimmy Ray Carty, who suffered a severe brain injury while participating in the drill.

As I said when the scandal first broke, this as clear of an indication as any that police culture promotes abusive behavior. To be honest, I'm kind of amazed that this has been going on for so long and that there have been so many injuries. If cops are willing to do this to each other, what does that mean for the average citizen? Even though this particular scandal is taking place in Texas, we can see the more generalized effects of such widespread police attitudes in the recent video footage of New Orleans police officers bashing repeatedly an innocent man's head into a wall on Bourbon Street (see post below). America clearly has a problem that that the mainstream refuses to take seriously: police culture, their norms and values, are decidedly out of line with what most people would think of as civilized. I hope to god I never end up on the receiving end of this crap.
